Enterprise Linux
Enterprise Linux is a special linux distribution,
which is certified and supported professionally. In contrast to Open Source
Linux, Enterprise Linux is not license free. Linux for Enterprises was offered
by Red Hat and Novell in the past, only.
Generally, Enterprise Linux is much cheaper, more secure and much more efficient
than Windows. However, in the past the main disadvantages of Linux over Microsoft
were, that the Unix Operating System was very difficult to run, that only few
applications were available and that a graphical user interface was missing.
With SuSE Linux 9 this has changed completely. The installation of Suse Linux 9 has got very easy. Many license free applications come as rpm packages, which can be installed with some clicks. For example to install Oracle Express Edition 10gR2, you just type in
rpm -ivh oracle_express_edition.rpm ...
Moreover, since last autumn Oracle offers free
Enterprise Linux, too. Thus, you can install a complete Application Server,
incorporating an Oracle Database Server 10gR2 on top of Enterprise Linux for
free. The free database runs on a SMP server on 1 CPU only, scaling
up to 1 GByte of Ram and 4 GByte of Tablespace.
Just the announcement put Red Hat shares down drastically, because Oracle Enterprise
Linux is a Red Hat 4 brand, basically.
